Chris and I did a power cleaning session of Aunt Glady last weekend. We spent about six hours together cleaning her from top to bottom in preparation for our trip. And let me tell you, reader, the winter did some damage! Living in the RV for the winter was a whole new level of dirt, dust and filth previously unknown in Aunt Glady’s sassy chassy.
So, it was a big job. And I am so glad to have it behind us.
At least most of it behind us. I still have a few areas of the RV that need some extra attention. One, is the oven. Do I really have to?
Two, is the mattresses. They don’t look bad, but the idea of them sitting out there completely bare for the past three months while the RV was closed up just doesn’t reach my cleanliness level. So, I decided to lean on my trusty essential oils for some deep cleaning and peace of mind.
DIY Mattress Cleaner Recipe
- 1 C baking soda (you can use the cheap kind)
- 10 drops essential oils*
- Combine the baking soda and essential oils.
- Apply mix to bare mattress. A sifter or fine strainer may help you to get an even layer on the mattress. You want the mattress to be completely covered. I used my hands at the end just to make sure every inch was dusted.
- Leave mixture as is for about an hour.
- Vacuum entire mixture from mattress.
*I used lavender & rosemary. Any cleaning essential oils you like will work. Avoid blue oils so you do not stain your mattress (I would avoid orange too for this reason).
A note on the amount of mattress cleaner to make: one batch is a good amount for a twin mattress. My queen mattress took a batch and a half. A king mattress would need a double batch.
Now, my mattresses smell fresh and clean, I am not as hesitant about putting my laundered bedding on them, and we are one step closer to being on the road!
How do you handle cleaning your RV mattress? Do you cover your mattress during storage times? I am considering it for our next storage period, but am not sure yet.
Thanks for joining me for another self care Sunday!
